Still No Explanation for Moratorium from Obama Administration
August 17, 2010
We had a U.S. Senate Small Business Committee field hearing in Lafayette on the effects of the moratorium on Louisiana businesses today. This is the second time I’ve asked the Obama administration to send a representative to explain their rationale for the moratorium and hear firsthand how it’s hurting Louisiana families and businesses. Once again, no one showed up. It’s sad, but it’s revealing of how the administration has approached this moratorium all along. They want to decide what they think is best for us, but it’s clear from their response to this committee that they don’t care how many jobs they kill in Louisiana.

Today I spoke at an oil and gas symposium on LSU’s campus in Baton Rouge. I raised concerns about the drilling moratorium and the Obama administration’s new increase in environmental regulatory bureaucracy that could very well stifle shallow water drilling in our Gulf. This is exactly what Melancon’s moratorium amendment empowers the administration to do.

Comments OffElena Kagan

As you may have heard, the U.S. Senate voted today to confirm Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court. As I’ve previously stated, I have deep concerns over Kagan’s past legal work – specifically her hostile views toward Americans’ right to keep and bear arms, military recruiters on campus, and right-to-life issues. Additionally, Kagan’s track record strongly suggests she may legislate from the bench, imposing her views on Americans.
I voted against confirming Kagan’s nomination because her judicial philosophy with regard to these issues does not appear to be consistent with the values of Louisiana voters. How would Charlie Melancon have voted? Since Melancon is seeking election to the U.S. Senate, he should answer this question. Based on Melancon’s record of steadfast support for President Obama’s agenda, I can only assume he would have voted “yes.”
What are your views regarding Elena Kagan’s nomination and subsequent confirmation? Do you support or oppose her serving as America’s newest Supreme Court Justice? Please share on my Facebook page.
