Obama’s First 100 Days
April 30, 2009
Obama has achieved more debt during his first 100 days than every other president combined over the first 219 years of our country. I voted against his budget last night that will make it far worse, doubling our debt in five years and tripling it in ten.
I’ll continue to provide Obama a check and balance in the Senate as he attempts to pass everything with his new liberal supermajority.
Thank you for your support,
Reappointment of U.S. Attorney Jim Letten
April 27, 2009
I just wanted to let you all know that we secured a win today in Senator Landrieu supporting Jim Letten as US Attorney. As you know, I’ve been strongly supporting Jim’s reappointment and his efforts to crack down on crime and aggressively prosecute political corruption cases.
I look forward to returning the bipartisan goodwill as the president recommends Jim and other Louisiana nominees. Thank you, and don’t forget to keep checking back to www.davidvitter.com for updates from the campaign trail and for ways to get involved.
Your friend,
No On New Energy Taxes
April 24, 2009
Last night, the United States Senate showed strong support for my amendment in opposition to President Obama’s plans to increase taxes on energy. These new taxes kill jobs. According to preliminary estimates, 271,000 oil and gas jobs annually would be destroyed by the Obama Administration’s new taxes and fees.
My legislation stated that Congress is opposed to increasing taxes on the cost of producing energy in the Gulf of Mexico and from raising taxes on American families, manufacturers, farmers, fishermen, and others.
While this does not guarantee increased energy taxes have been killed for this year, it’s a strong first step forward that clearly shows President Obama, Senator Reid, and Speaker Pelosi that 63 of my fellow Senators are opposed to increasing taxes on oil and gas production as well as the American consumer.
Thanks for your ongoing support, and please keep checking back to www.davidvitter.com for updates.
My Recent Bailout Amendment
April 23, 2009
As you know, I have been at odds with President Obama and his plans to bankrupt our country with impulsive bailouts and an obscene budget. Just yesterday, I introduced an amendment that will take some of the debt off the shoulders of future generations, because they are the ones who will be hit hardest by this reckless fiscal irresponsibility.
This amendment will allow banks receiving bailout money to repay funds through the Troubled Asset Relief Program. I think this would be a great move for our country – to read more about it, please click here.
I hope you’ll take a look by clicking the link above and let me know what you think by contacting me on my website, www.davidvitter.com.
Thank you,
Comments OffAppearing live on Fox Business Channel today at 3 CST!
April 22, 2009
I wanted to let you know that I will be appearing on the Fox Business Channel live today at 3 PM (CST). I will be discussing my amendment to reform the Obama administrations use of the bailout money that has been so irresponsibly pushed by the liberals in the Congress and White House.
As you know, I have voted against every single bailout that has been proposed, and I strongly disagree with the massive budget that President Obama and his liberal allies have been supporting. I believe that it will bankrupt our country and place the burden of debt onto our children and grandchildren, a move that I don’t think many Americans will take lightly.
I hope you’ll tune in to the Fox Business Channel today at 3:00 PM (4:00 EST) to hear me talk about this amendment and my plans for reform.
Thank you,
Comments OffThanks for Making TEA Party Day A Success!
April 17, 2009
Friends,
I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make TEA Party day a success on Wednesday. Thomas Jefferson once said that “all tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent,” and on Wednesday, we let Washington’s liberal leaders know that we will not be silenced.
Our fight for lower taxes and fiscal responsibility is far from over, however. Washington pundits and politicians attacked me this week for being a vocal proponent of the TEA Parties, ridiculing me and launching character attacks for defending our conservative values.
Your voice is being heard, but I need your help to keep up the fight, and there are a number of ways that you can get involved. If you haven’t yet signed up to receive campaign emails, I encourage you to do so at www.davidvitter.com so you can stay up to date on the latest from the campaign trail.
Also on my website, you can check out other important issues and petitions in the “issues” section, and you can even make an online donation to my campaign to help me fight the liberal leaders who want to silence our conservative voices. Every dollar counts!
I hope you’ll check back to www.davidvitter.com today to learn more about my reelection campaign and about the important role you can play in the fight for our conservative values.
Thanks again, and don’t forget to check back to my blog for updates!
Comments OffTEA Party Day Tomorrow: Sign the Petition Today!
April 14, 2009
Tomorrow,April 15th, will be recognized all across the great state of Louisiana and the rest of the country as “National T.E.A. (Taxed Enough Already) Party Day.” Patriots in more than a dozen of Louisiana’s cities will gather to protest higher taxes, out-of-control government spending and perhaps the greatest period of fiscal irresponsibility Washington has ever seen.
Thanks to all of my Citizen Co-Sponsors who have signed my TEA Party petition. For those of you who haven’t, I hope you’ll help us reach our goal of 5,000 new petition signers by the end of this week by visiting www.davidvitter.com/teaparty and joining the movement.
Thank you for your help in the fight for lower taxes and greater fiscal responsibility. With your help, we will get the message through.

Below is an excerpt from the letter Senator Feingold and I wrote to RealClearPolitics.com today.

Congress Doesn’t Deserve Any Special Treatment
By Senators David Vitter and Russ Feingold
As families across the United States struggle with a troubled economy, they are being forced to make sacrifices and rein in their budgets. Now, more than ever, folks are more mindful of spending their money wisely – both in their own personal finances and in the government’s use of tax dollars.
Rightful public concern has grown on both sides of the political aisle about the appropriate use of public funds for Wall Street bailouts as taxpayers wait for a positive return on their investment. We hold different opinions as to how government should best spend taxpayer dollars, but one misuse of public funds should unite all Americans in outrage – automatic pay raises for members of Congress.
Since 1989, when Congress passed a law making annual pay raises automatic, members of the House and Senate have received regular pay increases based on a formula set by that legislation. This 20-year-old backdoor pay raise system has allowed Congress to increase its own pay virtually every year without public debate and with very little – if any – public attention.
We have no doubt that this provision shares large bipartisan support in Congress, although such supporters are more likely to keep that support secret. The problem is that this is simply not the type of bipartisanship that Congress or the public are looking for.
That is why we have joined together in a bipartisan effort to bring about a permanent end to this outrageous practice of automatic pay raises for members of Congress. If Congress wants to increase its pay, it should do so publicly and it should do so through debates, votes and legislative committee hearings. The American people should have a chance to weigh in too – instead of paying for raises without even knowing it.
